A Simple Way to Reuse Water for Porch Flowers

A Simple Way to Reuse Water for Porch Flowers

Introduction to Porch gardening

Porch Container gardening is an easy low maintenance way to bring the beauty of flowers close to home, even if you don’t have a large yard.

Over the years I have grown Marigolds and geraniums in the summer and Mums in the Fall, often spreading the plants along the porch windowsills, so each plant has its own space to grow.

The care is much simpler because the flowers are nearby.

You can check on the plants and watch them grow from inside the house.

Reusing water for the flowers is a practical, eco friendly way that saves time, reduces waste, and keeps the seasonal display vibrant throughout the year.

Using Reused Water for Healthy Flowers

To water my porch flowers, I used an older cooler filled halfway with water.

I usually used tap water for convenience, but I've since collected rainwater because it saves a little money, still a nearby source, and its better for plant health.

The watering process

I would submerge each pot, let it soak, then lift it out so the excess water would drip back into the cooler.

Wait a few moments for the water to stop dripping before returning the pot to the porch sill.

Even while on the sill, the water would continue to drip slowly.

This thorough soaking keeps the soil and roots hydrated for several days even in hot sunny weather, but when the soil is dry again, it's time to soak again.

Other containers such as shallow tubs, buckets with drainage trays, or recycled storage containers also work well for this method.

A small rack or mesh above the container can help excess water drip from the pots without holding them manually, making the process faster and more convenient.

Why Rainwater is Better

Rainwater is gentler on plants than tap water and can improve their growth.

It is naturally soft, free of the chemicals sometimes found in tap water, and slightly acidic, which many flowers prefer.

Using rainwater can help prevent mineral buildup in the soil that may occur with regular tap water and can keep the leaves and roots healthier.

Collecting rainwater for your flowers is also an environmentally friendly way to reduce water waste and make the most of natural resources.

Maintaining the Water

Over time, the water in the container may accumulate sediment and soil, which will make the water murky.

If the water sits for too long, it can attract pests. To keep things clean and prevent Mosquitoes, make sure to keep a lid on the container when not in use.

Every few days, I skim the water to clean out small bits of debris to keep the water clear.

After a week, I replace the water entirely with fresh water to ensure my flowers continue to thrive.

I also check the soil in each pot and rewater the flowers once the soil is close to dry, making sure they always have enough moisture.

This careful attention keeps the container gardening system efficient and sustainable.

Seasonal Flower Care

The amount of water and attention your flowers need changes with the seasons.

During hot spring and summer days, the sun dries out the soil quicker, so the plants may need to soak more deeply.

While in cooler fall months, plants don't grow as fast, stay wet longer, and watering can be lighter and less frequent.

Choosing seasonal flowers for your porch helps maintain a vibrant garden year round.

Marigolds and geraniums thrive in spring and summer, while mums brighten the porch in fall.

Even indoor plants can benefit from this reusing water method too, just be careful not to overdo it since they don't get as much sun as the plants outside.

Benefits of Reusing Water for Flower Care

Using this method saves both time and effort.

The faucet at my house is a little distance from the porch, this method eliminates the going back and forth from the faucet and getting rain water from my catch buckets outside, which makes watering the plants much easier.

Reusing water reduces that extra work and even helps conserve water by making the most of every gallon, which really adds up over a long growing season.

It also allows for thorough watering. This soaking technique provides consistent moisture, so you dont have to worry about the soil being too dry or accidentally overwatering the plants.

Whether using an old cooler, tub, bucket, or recycled container, reusing water for porch flowers is a simple, eco friendly, and time saving method for any gardener.

With just a little setup and attention, you can enjoy healthy, vibrant flowers close to home without constant trips to the faucet.

It’s an easy trick that keeps your plants happy and your gardening routine more enjoyable.
